The University of California, Merced P3 Project was a successful public-private partnership initiative to design, construct, finance, operate, and maintain a new campus expansion for the University of California, Merced. The project's primary objective was to accommodate the growing number of enrolled students at the university.
Completed in 2023, the project encompassed the construction of approximately 1.2 million square feet of new facilities, including student housing, academic buildings, research facilities, and other campus amenities. Furthermore, a large solar panel installation was developed to provide renewable energy to the campus, emphasizing sustainability.
The project's total cost amounted to around $1.3 billion. Financing for the project was a combination of private investment and public funding. This included $600 million in private equity and $600 million in tax-exempt bonds issued by the California Educational Facilities Authority. Additionally, the State of California contributed $123 million in funding for the project, demonstrating further, generational support at the state level.
The University of California, Merced P3 Project represents a significant investment in expanding the university's campus to meet the needs of its growing student population. With its completion, the project successfully delivers new facilities and amenities while promoting sustainability through the implementation of a substantial solar panel installation.
